At the start of one of Muddy Water Tours walking excursions, guests meet a somewhat non-traditional tour guide. They’re greeted by a costumed character, prone to pranks and brimming with punchlines. This character walks with them through the city, sharing tales of Brookside Cemetery, Winnipeg’s boom and bust eras, or old-timey medical practices—such as advertising pharmaceuticals directly to consumers. It’s all so engaging, it’s easy to forget it’s historically accurate, too.

If the team behind Muddy Water Tours didn’t know their Winnipeg history, though, they’d probably have a different name. Winnipeg means “muddy water” in Cree, and the city even went by that name back in 1866. They’d also have less success contacting ghosts on their ghost tours—but their guides know the past well enough to track down spirits regularly. They contact them at haunts from a jail to a local theater where the dead (may) still perform.
