Much of Eagle Lake looks untouched by time—its 68,000 acres are bordered by more than 644 kilometres of forested shoreline, home to moose, bears, and bald eagles. But it’s the trophies lurking in the cold depths, such as the muskie, walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and lake trout, that attract fishermen. At the northern end of the lake, owners Denise and Chris Cooney welcome anglers and hunters year-round to Deer Trail Lodge, Camp & Resort. Surrounded by wilderness, Denise and Chris maintain a log lodge built in 1938, which is the centerpiece of the two- to four-bedroom cabins and cottages outfitted with modern baths, full kitchens, picture windows, and decks facing the lake. The couple also rents boats, or lets guests bring their own to fish the lake’s more than 400 islands and bays. Beyond fishing and hunting, the area affords canoeing and kayaking amid calm waters and waterfalls as well as sightseeing of soapstone quarries and maple-syrup mines.
