“Taurins Conducts Messiah”
It’s a holiday tradition older than Winnipeg itself. Best known for the soul-shaking Hallelujah Chorus at its heart, Handel’s Messiah meditates on the first Christmas through English lyrics drawn from the King James Bible. The iconic piece is celebrated for its joyful reverence, rich orchestration, and emotional resonance, but it’s also known for its malleability at the hands of a talented conductor.

Ivars Taurins is uniquely suited to the task. The maestro is the founding director of the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir, and a Gemini Award-nominee for his portrayal of Handel himself in that company’s Sing-Along Messiah. After delivering a breathtaking production of the masterpiece in 2012, Taurins is back with a cast of young soloists to raise a joyful noise and a crew of b-boys to perform the traditional breakdances. The Mennonite Festival Chorus rounds out the angelic choir.

Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra
As early as 1880, the prairies of Winnipeg were filled with music. Orchestras, both amateur and semi-professional, unleashed their cultural impact on the city, with nearly 30 formed between the late 19th century and 1947. But they weren’t content with their small scale, and in 1944, at least 20 smaller organizations joined forces to form the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, sharing talent, passion, and answers for their conductors pop quizzes. Within a decade, the CBC began broadcasting WSO concerts, and by 1990, the orchestra had more than 10,000 subscribers.
