As the province’s governing body for competitive canoeing and kayaking, the Manitoba Paddling Association tutors students in proper paddling. Held at the Manitoba Canoe & Kayak Centre on the Red River and led by certified instructors, the two-hour paddling courses turn dilettante dunkers into intermediate oarsmen able to captain canoes, kayaks, and floating Ferraris. During Intro to Kayaking, students commandeer stable, beginner-friendly flat-bottomed kayaks, in which they practice paddling basics. Intro to Kayaking 2 progresses these skills, plunking students into sleek, flat-water kayaks. Manitoba Paddling recommends weather-appropriate clothing and footwear, as well as a change of dry clothing in case a territorial sturgeon insists on a wrestling match. Students awakened to new depths of watery wanderlust can consider a full-blown club membership.
