Rough Rock Lodge transports anglers from civilization to a secluded, wind-protected bay in the heart of Ontario’s Sunset Country, where fishermen pursue the “grand slam” of walleye, northern pike, muskie, and smallmouth bass as well as yellow perch and black crappie in the surroundings of the Canadian wilderness. The four-day, five-night fishing trip bunks freshwater Ahabs in cabin accommodations with a housekeeping plan, meaning they are responsible for bringing or catching their own food and finding the resolve to not hit snooze more than three times.
Amenities include wireless Internet access, 24-hour electricity and heat including hot water, bed and bath linens, and cooking equipment such as dishes, utensils, pots and pans, and a stove. Pole-wielding pilgrims also get use of Rough Rock’s new 17′ Misty River boats, outfitted with 40-horsepower Honda four-stroke engines (gas and oil provided), bow-mounted trolling motors, depth finders, three pedestal swivel seats, live wells and bait wells, life jackets, and landing nets to put on the head of whoever gets the most snags. Prime fishing spots range from bays and weed lines to rock piles and mid-lake reefs, all within 5–10 minutes by boat. Rough Rock adheres to a catch and release policy—fishermen may harvest catches within the legal limit for shoreline lunches or enticing the local wildlife into wrestling matches, but they must photograph and release all trophies.
Rough Rock Lodge is boat-in lodge located on Rough Rock Lake, 45 miles north of Kenora on the Winnipeg River System. Buyers of this Groupon will have to arrange travel by car, plane, or all-terrain segway to the designated pick-up spot, where Rough Rock’s lodge will transport travellers the rest of the way by boat. Travellers must bring their own fishing equipment but can acquire fishing licenses on-site as well as supplemental equipment at the tackle shop, including those plastic fish that sing upbeat tunes. Add meal plans (breakfast $15/day, dinner $40/day) and guide service ($200/day).
